Derrick Mason wasn't the receiver of the '00s, but he was close - Shutdown ... - NFL - Yahoo! Sports:

"So here’s to you, Derrick Mason. You may not have had the star power of some others, but know that your contributions were still appreciated by many. When the season finally rolls around, and the Ravens come out with their CFL-quality receiving corps, I’ll pour a little bit out for you."

oh man, xmas came early this year.  mason was the only ravens WR i was scared of.  they've got nothing, now.

on another note, i respected mason.  he was one of the only ravens i liked. glad he's getting his props in the yahoo blog.

Big-money quarterback deals coming | ProFootballTalk.com:

"But we will wonder in the wake of this windfall how much the 'superelite' players -- the franchise quarterbacks -- will command when their time to do new deals rolls around.

We're talking about (in order of expiring contract) Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger."

interesting how the cheapest guys on this list are the most successful.  actually i think brady is the poorest of this group, maybe.

hmmm....

super bowl xliii?

so... pitt and penn state have the same mascot

Pete PumaImage via Wikipedia

according to wikipedia

The Cougar (Puma concolor), also known as puma, mountain lion, catamount, or panther, depending on the region, is a mammal of the Felidae family, native to the Americas.

and

The Nittany Lion is the mascot of the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania and its athletic teams. It refers to the mountain lions that once roamed near the school, and to Mount Nittany, a local landmark.

ironic and hilarious considering how much Pitt and Penn state hate one another.

nfl network's top five QB's / there needs to be a QB stat for 'wins'

nfl network ranked their top five QB's today. of course, they left ben roethlisberger off the list. in fact, three QB's (mcnabb, cutler, brees) on the list have never even won a superbowl.

they even went ahead to mention that another QB with no ring is number six (rivers).

so Ben is number seven? at best? it annoys me to no end.

i wish there was a QB stat for 'wins', similar to the wins category for mlb pitchers. good leadership & clutch performances cannot be adequately measured with the current QB stats.

do rings mean nothing? how many current QB's have won two titles? only guys i can think of are Brady & Ben.

people love to point out how roethlisberger choked in superbowl XL. fair enough. but do they look at the previous game? or the game before that, when he went to indianapolis and ended the season of '#2 QB' peyton manning?

if i remember right, the score at halftime was steelers 21, colts 3.

the next week, in the afc championship, roethlisberger played a near-flawless game, and had two incredible fade route TD passes. this game (on the road again, in denver) is the one i point to most often, when people question his skills.

beautiful performance.

so far i haven't even mentioned the game two weeks before that, the 2005 wild card, where ben destroyed cincinnatti. again, this was on the road.

roethlisberger had three touchdowns in that one.

fact is, ben had a brilliant playoff performance in 2005. nfl network should have called their list 'top five fantasy QB's'.

here are the facts, for those interested in facts:

Reports: Cavaliers, Varejao reach deal - NBA - Yahoo! Sports:

"The Cleveland Cavaliers and Anderson Varejao(notes) reportedly have agreed on a six-year contract that could be worth as much as $50 million.

...Known for his hustle, Varejao posted career-highs with 42 starts, 8.6 points per game and a field-goal percentage of .536 last season"

"known for his hustle", meaning he can't score but falls on the floor a lot.

Why, why would the Cavs make this deal. argh. i guess they won't be winning anytime soon.
